Using Comics

Anu Rai I had seen a series on TV about untouchability and caste discrimination and I thought it was an important issue to highlight. It is related to water and other aspects of life also. This is caste discrimination at the hiti.

This is a story I made up set in Patan. The moon comes to the rescue of the animals by pulling up the ground water with its gravity. I just started drawing one panel and the story came to me. When I started I did not know how it would end.

My story is inspired by the medical team at the research unit OUCRU in Patan. First I made the valley then zoomed into Patan hospital. It’s a story of how typhoid patients come to the hospital and it’s a story of researching for a new cure. They find a new cure and so at the end there is a press conference. In actuality there is no one magic cure. Scientists try different antibiotics but are worried that antibiotics are getting resistant to the drugs.

I drew about typhoid. I was inspired by hearing about disease in Patan hospital and Typhoid causing bacteria. People were drinking water from a stone tap in Patan area and they got ill and were rushed to the hospital and the doctors and nurses are in dilemma about the disease and there are more and more patients. This is a mix of imagination and truth. It based on the research of Dr Abhilasha Karkey.

The idea for my comic came from Shristhi. She told us how she went on the Bagmati expedition and after a few kilometres down stream they found Bagmati in its fresh form and how it was clear and non-polluted at all. You still couldn’t drink it but still it was beautiful. I imagne the Bagmati like that in the future and how these people go and try to find the beautiful Bagmati.

I heard a story from Shristhi Vaidya. Who is a member of the Bagmatic clean up project On their expedition on the Bagmati they interviewed a fisherman who explained that sometimes the fish arrive dead down river due to pollution in the Bagmati. Still he collects the fish and sells them.

My comic was inspired buy a local woman from a woman’s group. She talked about her place back at Balapa where she is originally from. She got married at Patan and she found Patan to be very chaotic and was awestruck by everything. It was all so busy and rushed and she associates Balapa with a lot of water and happiness but here she has to fetch water from a nearby hiti and it is really difficult to do that.

One woman from Patan told about how her home is right in front of a stone spout nearby Chaitya (a small stupa in Patan). When she was a child she had a habit of looking out of the window at night whenever there was a crowd. But her parents told her not to look out at night because it was believed that Kichkanti (a maleficent female spirit) came to bathe there. They said that if one sees her, it will scare you so deeply that it’s hard to overcome (Satto jaanu). Later many people started coming to live as renters. They used to come out at night to bath in a single cloth. They used to get scared thinking what has been said is true.

When I interacted with the women’s group they were really interested to tell me about mythical stories. I remembered the story of Wasa Hiti. Which is about a Nag king giving blessin to a farmer who saved the Nag Queen. He gave the man stones. Where the stones were thrown a water source sprang.
